About program

SHO works, partly, under the assumption that in many contexts the theoretical and participatory aspects of physical education and culture are often experienced as separate phenomena. SHO’s aspiration is to introduce, with hopes to make completely apparent, the wholeness substantiated by what we do with our bodies and how we think and speak about what we do with our bodies, be they technical, competitive, instructional, or political, ethical, or social contexts.

Next, SHO is open to all those who have curiosity, passion, or interest in the outdoors, sports, health, in all of their broadness and correlation. SHO hopes to decenter and diversify exactly who participates in the “physical education” context and to illustrate both the complex depth and simple fun of its varied theories and applications. Also unique and central to SHO is that it is a flexible study abroad experience which caters to students’ various scheduling and academic needs by offering four different study terms for students (more below).

Finally, SHO deems it essential for students to become well-acquainted with the storied and sometimes paradoxical development of the Czech nation’s narrative concerning physical culture and outdoor life, and in all of its specificity. SHO students will learn how to contextualize today´s Czech Republic in today’s world as well as in its decades under Communism as they will also appreciate the multiple and thought-provoking ways that sports, health, and even natural environments themselves can resist or reinforce social and ideological systems.
